Proven Migraine Treatment For Effective Migraine Relief
The severity of a migraine headache can sometimes cause so much pain that some people will go to great lengths just to get some relief
. Migraines can be treated by the use of prescription medication which can be either abortive or preventive, non prescription drugs such as aspirin, natural supplements or, by natural relief methods such as acupuncture.
Abortive medication works quickly to ease the effects of a migraine. The drugs can be taken orally, by an injection, or by use of a nasal spray. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen are also good for the treatment of migraines. These do not require a prescription. However, you still have to exercise extreme caution when using them. Many migraine sufferers can innocently overuse medication, due to the frequency of the headaches. The effect of this is two-fold, the drug eventually becomes ineffective, or they suffer from what are called 'rebound headaches', which occur as soon as the medication has worn off.
Herbs have also been successful in treating migraine headaches. Foremost among these are butterbur and feverfew. Studies have been carried out on both of these herbs and their effect on migraines. These have concluded that there is a definite link between the use of these extracts, and a reduction in the frequency of migraine headaches. However, it is recommended that you contact a health care professional before using them, as there some mild side effects.
Another recommended supplement is coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10. As migraine sufferers look for more natural treatments, herbs like feverfew and butterbur as well as CoQ10, are becoming very attractive treatment options in the prevention of migraines. Studies have found that CoQ10 reduces the frequency of migraines.
Acupuncture therapy has also been successfully used in migraine treatment. The technique targets particular points in the body, in order to correct energy imbalances, and involves the use of fine, solid needles inserted into the skin. Once these imbalances are corrected, then the body is able to overcome pain such as that brought on by migraine headaches. The relief gained by this type of treatment has been said to be long lasting.
For migraine brought on by stress and muscle tension physical therapy is a useful treatment method. Therapy will help to relieve the muscle tension that is causing your migraine headaches. It can be used to target particular problem areas.
Migraine treatment can come in various forms. For those who prefer not to take medication, alternative remedies in the form of herbs such as feverfew and butterbur are available. For those tension related migraines, physical therapy is recommended.
