Prostate Enlargement Treatments: Options For Treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Prostate enlargement treatments come in different forms and give different benefits

. These treatments are designed to minimize or end the progression of prostate enlargement. This is usually diagnosed after a rectal exam, where the doctor introduces a greased gloved finger in the rectum to examine any abnormality in the prostate.

Prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), usually starts around the age of 30, evolving in a gradual manner. The symptoms are often observed after reaching the age of 50.

Prostate enlargement treatments are often not necessary. Annual monitoring of the prostate is usually recommended by doctors to observe the progression of the disease. If in case the symptoms pose the threat of severe conditions like cancer, medical treatment could be used.

Alpha-blockers help in relaxing the prostates smooth muscles, as well as the neck of the bladder. These medications relieve the urinary blockage caused by prostate enlargement, although it may cause side effects like fatigue, light-headedness, or headaches. Among the alpha-blockers are alfuzosin, tamsulosin, terazosin, or doxazosin. These only relieve the symptoms but do not reduce prostate size.

Another medication used as prostate enlargement treatment is 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. These block testosterone conversion to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), its active form. These could reduce 25 percent of the prostates size after 6 to 12 months. The symptoms are also relieved after this period. Among these drugs are dutasteride and finasteride. In some cases, finasteride may bring erection problems, loss of libido, or ejaculation problems.

For severe symptoms like complete inability of urinating, or cases where the problem does not respond to medications, surgery is usually advised by the doctor.

TURP The patient will be given anesthesia. Then, the doctor introduces a special device to the urethra and through the male sex organ. The device is then used to scrape away an inner prostate section, relieving urine flow from the bladder.

Laser procedure This could vary in many approaches, but they generally involve taking away part of the prostate tissue. Laser procedure requires less recovery time than TURP, although the latter is more beneficial in the long run.

Microwave therapy Microwave energy is involved in this process, where the energy is carried to the patients prostate to eliminate prostate cells, eventually leading to reducing prostate size.

These methods should be understood cautiously. The symptoms of BPH are not always serious. By going yearly to your doctor, you could observe how the condition progresses and determine what prostate enlargement treatment is advisable for you.
