What Are The Choices In Treatment For Sad?

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a very real health condition that millions

of people in northern regions and higher altitude suffer from each year. The onset of SAD typically occurs in the last few months of the year, when days in the northern hemisphere become shorter and the nights longer. Obviously, shorter days mean less hours of sunlight. If you are seeking a treatment for SAD, then there are medical and alternative treatments from which to choose. Let's look at the symptoms and treatments of SAD.

You might think that those suffering from SAD also suffer from other emotional and mood disorders year round, when if fact this is untrue. Actually, most people with SAD don't exhibit symptoms of other mood or emotional disorders at any other time of the year except in the late fall and winter. They function normally during spring, summer and early fall.

Because of the varying degrees of severity of the disorder and its coinciding symptoms, not all those suffering with SAD are able to get relief from the symptoms of this disorder with the traditional treatment for SAD. Yoga is a form of exercise that separates the body into three parts; the mind, body and the spirit, and focuses exercises on strengthening all three segments of the body to achieve optimal health and fitness. Yet not all patients will gain positive results for SAD using only this method.

A little known fact is that there are also people whose moods are affected by too much light. In contrast to dealing with SAD in the winter, reverse SAD occurs in summer months when there are longer hours of light, and the brain becomes confused and overwhelmed by longer amounts of light. In some individuals, the brain cannot function properly in order to regulate moods. If you think that you or someone you know may have this condition, then you might want to research SAD a bit further. Symptoms include bouts of depression and lethargy during summer months when people are more active outdoors.

As the seasons begin to change and late fall and winter arrives, if you find yourself feeling depressed for more than two weeks, then please call your doctor and schedule an appointment to discuss your symptoms. Your doctor can determine if you are suffering from SAD and discuss with you the right treatment for SAD. If traditional methods don't work, consider alternative treatments; you don't want to let this disorder take over your life every year.
