Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in men globally

. It is generally a slow growing cancer, but it has been known to aggressively spread. The cancer can easily spread to, and infect, other parts of the body, primarily the lymph nodes and bones. It can be very painful and also lead to reproductive and urinary problems. In many men, the symptoms may not even be noticed. This is why many health care professionals recommend annual screenings, especially in men 50 or older. Although this is a serious disease, prostate cancer can be treated when caught early enough.

Effective treatment of prostate cancer depends on many variables. Age is one of the largest factors. It is quite rare for individuals 45 or younger to get prostate cancer. This risk factor increases as the person gets older. It is most common for men between 50 and 70 to develop prostate cancer, although, some men may never know that they have it. Your diet and genetics also affect your possible risk. Men that have an immediate male family member who has prostate cancer, have twice the risk of getting it themselves. Black men are the most at risk, while white males are more at risk than Hispanics.

Less is known about the actual effects of your diet on the growth of this cancer. High meat intake and a lack of vitamin D are thought to increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. Also, surprisingly, studies have shown that a male taking multivitamins more than once a day are at higher risk. Along with those, folic acid supplements are really the only dietary risks that are known of.

Various common forms of prostate cancer found in elderly patients develop so slowly that treatment is not needed. Also, it isn't usually treated in men with a short life expectancy or a serious medical condition. In those that do require treatment, a combination of different methods is usually implored. Radiation treatment is usually the method used most commonly. If that doesn't work, a radical prostatectomy may be attempted. These surgeries however, can be quite complicated. The success rate for treating this degree of cancer is almost 75%. For treating aggressive forms of prostate cancer, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and several other treatments are used in conjunction with each other. The success rate is also relatively high but the cancer has more of a chance to return. With both forms though, successful treatment is very possible.
