What Causes Prostate Cancer: A Summary Of What We Know Today

Just what causes prostate cancer? Fundamentally

, the cause is due to DNA modifications in a healthy prostate cell. Of course, this DNA dictates cell function, and DNA is also genetic. The incidence of inherited causes, though, is far less than those specific DNA changes that can occur over the typical man's lifetime, and thereby, lead to the illness.

Still, exactly what causes prostate cancer? Additionally, there are risk factors, those circumstances that further one's chance of becoming sick. Some risk factors can be changed or controlled, like smoking. However, some others can't, like age and genetics. The same can be said for the other risk factors: race, nationality, obesity, or actual prostate infection or inflammation.

Sometimes, during an individual's life, cells don't perfectly divide into two brand new cells, making perfect DNA copies. Flawed changes in DNA can take place, another thing we know about what causes prostate cancer. Sure, every random mutation doesn't produce the disease, and what causes prostate cancer is likely to be associated to such other aspects, like hormone levels and nutrition. Yet, the more rapidly prostate cells develop and divide, chances increase for mutations to take place. Thus, what causes prostate cancer becomes more likely, for sure.

As noted earlier, what causes prostate cancer may be affiliated with specific increased hormone levels, like the male hormones of testosterone and androgen. Yet another one is known as IGF-1. More conclusive research is needed to corroborate these findings, though, with respect to what causes prostate cancer.

As more targeted research findings establish more causal links, treatment options should increase, hopefully more helpful and less invasive. Formerly, chemotherapy and surgery were the only options, but now this is no longer the case. Medication and other targeted treatments have been shown to work well with this once completely lethal illness.

Finally, what causes prostate cancer remains a huge issue of concern for researchers. Recently, the Young Investigators Award Program was begun by the Prostate Cancer Foundation, one goal in mind: to continue such study through the identification of a team of future medical and scientific researcher leaders to keep prostate cancer research innovative and growing. Currently, PCF has come up with funds in excess of $500 million for research support, to ensure more effective treatments and cures. There is additional commitment to more funding and future endeavors, with the end of knowledge and progress, the driving force in place.
