Promoting the field of Equine Assisted Development within Australia
Equine assisted therapeutic interventions have been making headlines World-wide, with research suggesting that some people gaina greaterbenefit from these equine assisted developmental activities rather than more traditional interventions.
Equine Assisted Development is the umbrella term to describe a vast range of human therapeutic interventions of which are assisted by the use of horses. Horses are ideal for assisting in therapeutic interventions due to their character. Horses do not judge people on physical appearance nor capabilities, formingresponses and interactionson a much deeper level being in tune with emotional and non verbal clues that humans offer.
Many titles are currently being used around the world to describe the various interventions available. The many different titles demonstrate the vast differencein interventions, practitioners background and training. Titles generally begin with Equine Assisted, Equine Facilitated or Equine Guided, followed by the type of intervention used, such as Therapy, Psychotherapy, Mental Health, Life Coaching, Development, Learning, Team Building. However, interventions such as Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding do not follow this naming pattern.
However despite the growing research, the number of equine assisted clinics and courses throughout the World, many of the Australian public remain unaware of this amazing field, or are only aware of therapeutic riding through an awareness of Riding for the Disabled. This means that many Australian's are missing out on these personal and therapeutic benefits.
EAD Australia is a new company that has been built to promote awareness of the field of equine assisted development, and provide the Australian Public with access to directories of practitioners and facilitators across the country.
Not only does EAD Australia aim to promote the field through the website directories, but also through networking opportunities, newsletters, marketing, merchandise and holding an Annual EAD Australia Conference, of which the first will be in 2011.
Australian Practitioners are invited to join the website and benefit from these networking opportunities such as forums, the practitioner newsletter, scholarships and grants, free listing of eventsand more - and most importantly be listed in the directories so that the service can be found!
Australian and International Educators are also invited to join, again receiving the member benefits. International Educators are welcomed as many Australian's are happy to travel overseas for their speicalised training (and have a holiday on the side!
Pieta Shakes, the Director of EAD Australia believes that the company has a great chance of promoting the field and developing great networks within Australia. Pieta aims for EAD Australia to remain flexible to listen to ideas of members and work alongside members for growth. Pieta is a credentialed mental health nurse, with postgraduate education in mental health (adult and child and adolescent) who works in Private Practice in New South Wales. Pieta also holds certification with EAGALA, Horse Operations qualifications and is now enrolled in a Bachelor of Equine Science.
