Travel to Bergamo - Traces a settlement of prehistoric age

Bergamo is an ancient city. We have found traces of a settlement of prehistoric age, between the sixth and fifth centuries BC, and is due to the main feature of these early inhabitants of the city in half and half on the hill top. Who comes from the plain it is the city on the hill (the root berg means mountain) that appears first in the distance: an image that captivated the great travelers of the past, like Stendhal, and still draws the attention of anyone traveling along the motorway connecting Milan to Venice. Bergamo is announced suddenly, with a fantastic sequence of towers, steeples and domes against the deep green of the Alps

On the edge of the great Po valley, Bergamo truly reveals its most genuine quality only to those who, through the modern town, successfully keeping an eye on the shaped profile of the ancient city, climbs the hill and adventure in the tangle of medieval streets. Suddenly, like an explosion of light, and here we are in the Old Town Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. He fell in love with Bernard Berenson and great architects as Le Corbusier and Wright. Berenson landed in the Bergamo valleys along the trace of Venetian artists, who brought up there the brightness of the lagoon. It was a very close relationship that bound Bergamo in Venice for nearly four centuries Bergamo shared history, art and culture of the Republic.

When Venice in 1561 decided to initiate the construction of the wall was going through a period of serious tensions with Spain, which also ruled on the State of Milan. It was a political rather than strategic objective, as the mighty fortress of Bergamo had to manifest the clear intention of the Republic to defend itself vigorously against any expansionist ambitions of the Spaniards, but at the same time reassuring because in the five-kilometer circuit of the ramparts could not be accepted a make it a large army offensive. The walls are very well preserved and offer, together with four doors that open on all four sides of the ancient city, one of the most important finds from the ramparts of the sixteenth century.

Today, along the great stone ring leads a walk with continuous views of the modern city, the plains and the mountains.
