Problems With Parental Anxiety Over Children's Hearing

Problems With Parental Anxiety Over Children's Hearing

As of recent Monday morning, the speech and hearing clinic ran a tight schedule

. Either a speech clinician or a hearing technician worked on twenty five children to examine them for any speech or hearing problems.

537 children from different preschools were also screened by a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist in their respective areas. More exams were needed for hearing for 61 children and 86 for further speech assessments.

Various preschools participated in the screening program and from these children some found out that they have normal speech and hearing capabilities and the others were advised to go and get reassessed.

According to the head of the local speech and hearing facility, they want to determine possible problems with hearing and speech early on before these worsen and develop into life altering handicaps.

She further says that they know, of course, that perfect speech and fully developed language are not expected among the preschool population, but they also realize that when expected milestones are not reached, there may be problems developing which can have a lasting effect if not treated early.

Considering the number of serious cases detected through the screening programs, the children have the time to get the care they need before growing older.

When it came to their child's hearing and speech, some of the parents were excessively anxious, says one of the volunteer workers. Being able to reassure them that things are normal has been a gratifying outcome of this project she says.

From one volunteer to another, the techniques needed for hearing examinations were shared and this volunteer program resulted from it. Calling up all the preschools within their proximity, these two ladies then began to arrange schedules for screenings for every single school.

Other than screening every child for hearing, further speech and language screenings were given to those pointed out by their teachers. The parents of the children who were absent or failed the assessments during that day were invited to bring their offspring to a clinic located at a certain area so that they could receive retests.

For each case they handled there was an analysis of certain elements like reaction to sound stimuli, speech sound usage, vocabulary, and sentence construction all considering a child's age to see if he is at par with the kind of development expected at his level to be able to determine the need for action.

There were some parents who were given suggestions for home management while some were referred to specialists. More tests were suggested for several cases including looking into different treatment.

In about two to three hours, a comprehensive exam can be given by the local speech and hearing clinic to a child who may be having some trouble with speech and hearing abilities.

Should treatment be necessary after the evaluations then it is possible to choose from a variety of programs including a home program, an individual or grouped weekly session, and a daily intensive program for preschoolers.

For these courses of action, nothing but benefit will be gained by the child considering how he is still at an early stage in his life for these are not only preventive but are also therapeutic.

Aside from the six preschool classes that are waiting for their initial screening the dates for the new series of rescreening will be set so that the notified parents can begin setting up appointments.
