Prevention and Treatment of Aging Skin

The search for eternal youth and beauty has been long-standing and has yielded numerous results in the field of anti-aging treatments

. Women dread seeing those first signs of aging. Now women are beginning to worry earlier in life about aging skin and trying to take precautions against it.

As skin ages, it becomes thinner and more easily damaged. The skin's ability to heal is decreased, as well as the elasticity, which causes wrinkles. Signs of aging include wrinkles, sagging, redness, discolored spots, and rough texture.

Daily skin care plays a big part in the prevention of the signs of aging. The hands are the most often neglected area when it comes to skin care. Use mild soap when washing hands. Anti-bacterial versions can often be drying. Make sure to moisturize your hands after washing, as dry skin is a major link to the appearance of aging.

Wrinkles are the most typical indicators of aging skin. There are ways to prevent or at least delay their appearance. First, drink plenty of water. Keeping your body hydrated means your skin "plumps" up and keeps wrinkles from forming. Nutrition is another key factor in staving off the signs of aging. Your body and skin need certain vitamins and antioxidants, which can be provided by a healthy diet. You can also supplement your diet with vitamins C and E, which have been proven to decrease the harmful effects the sun has on your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face twice a day, and make sure to moisturize.

There are many treatments available now to help with the symptoms of aging. Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and rebuilds the collagen that is needed to make the skin more pliable. Alpha Hydroxy Acids help exfoliate the skin as well, and are known to lighten discoloration and help with fine lines and wrinkles.

Aside from these treatments and forms of prevention, there are also cosmeceuticals to consider. These are thought to have medicinal properties and include Retinol or vitamin A.

Other treatments are administered by aestheticians or doctors. This includes dermabrasion, which removes lines, scars, and sun damage. Chemical peels remove the upper surface of skin and expose the new, cleaner skin. There is also laser resurfacing, which is meant as a short term solution and used to treat larger areas.
