Preparing for a Ski Trip to Canada

For many people, winter means that it's once again time to hit the slopes. This year, according to the New York Times, ski resort operators are once again trying to attract customers by offering deep discounts and low prices. As the Times notes, "It's a strategy that worked a year ago when resorts were faced with lower precipitation and a slumping economy. Despite those setbacks, hefty price cuts were responsible in part for resorts having their second-best season ever, with visits that totaled nearly 60 million, according to a survey by the National Ski Areas Association. This season the industry is hoping for a repeat."

Canada is one of the most popular destinations for skiing, with resorts in Alberta and British Columbia offering some of the best conditions. British Columbia is famous for its ski resorts, especially in Whistler Blackcomb, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Alberta is also world-renowned for the quality of its powder, especially in the resorts located in Banff National Park.

To take advantage of the deals available in Canada this year, you'll need a valid passport. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative requires that all Americans traveling to Canada by plane and most Americans traveling to Canada by land or sea have a US passport.

If you don't currently have a valid passport, you'll need to act fast. It usually takes about 6 weeks to get your passport if you apply at the post office with standard processing. Apply for expedited processing and you can cut that time down to 3 weeks if you pay an additional $60 and request expedited processing.

But many of the deals available this year are for last-minute trips. If you don't already have a passport, you may need to make an appointment at a passport agency office or use an expediting company like Rush My Passport to get your passport issued more quickly.
