Pottery Wheel For Children - Developing Skills
The Potter's Wheel dates back many centuries ago when clay was coiled on mats
and leaves eventually aided by the turning of the Potter's Wheel, or Lathe as it's sometimes known. Skill, co-ordination and concentration were required for this craft then as is the case today.Encouraging Children to focus and concentrate is becoming increasingly difficult in today's fast moving society. Moving between TV screens and Computers has become the 'norm' for children from a very young age. Whilst this can be a good babysitting service it doesn't encourage Children to develop their imagination or creativity.
Working with clay encourages children to focus and concentrate whilst also working on their imagination. So without really knowing it, they are multi-tasking and using many skills in a rather fun way. This is enhanced when using clay in conjunction with a Kids Pottery Wheel. These are usually appropriate for children from 7 years onwards, depending on the individual child. A child has to concentrate on maintaining the correct speed of the wheel whilst manipulating the clay and creating an image in the mind on the final product. Numerous skills are used for such a task and as it's repeated time after time like any other skill it becomes second nature and the brain automatically sends out the right signals.
Giving Children the choice to 'create' gives room for independent thinking, decision making, problem solving, time management and pride in the ability to follow a process. The bonus is that there will be an end product. Skilled or not doesn't really matter as the child can get back on the kids pottery wheel and start the process again.
Encouraging children to develop such skills and to pursue patience and persistence will stay with them for life. It will instil confidence and discipline in their beliefs about themselves and their ability to achieve for themselves. Importantly for most children much fun can be enjoyed with the pottery wheel for kids. It's a relaxing and often therapeutic craft that really can be enjoyed by anyone.
Focusing on this process can take a child or adult into a world of their own, stimulating the imagination and enjoying the moment. The benefits children gain from creativity cannot be underestimated. Children from a young age can begin to explore the texture of play doh or plasticine before moving onto pottery clay. Creativity of whatever nature serves as a stepping stone in developing and fine tuning important skills later in life.
