Pointers On Good Tourist Behavior

Lets assume you have decided where to go on your next relaxing vacation

. All your bags and stuff are set, as well as your tickets and accommodations. But hold on, before stepping foot outside your lovely house and jumping in the next plane or cruise ship, be sure youve packed along your manners in your luggage.

Everyone shouldnt leave their etiquettes aside. Although having a vacation outside your city or country means endless fun and relaxation, remember that this also means discovering new adventures and meeting warm-hearted unique people that live differently from your usual life.

Dont add up to the usual negative connotation of tourists being insensitive and arrogant. Be the best representative of your homeland, and leave them a great impression that they will cherish for a lifetime.

Below are five tips to avoid playing the role of the dumb tourist, and make locals remember you long after youve left.

BE GIVING, NOT GULLIBLE Be generous if your budget allows it, especially if the exchange rate is agreeable. However, set limits on your generosity. There are always people and establishments cashing in on unsuspecting tourists, by jacking up prices to unreasonable levels.

You can always be generous by leaving some tip to the hard-working waiters and great cooks. However, if the amount you already paid is enough to pay the tip, save your money for the next worthy person who just might need it. You can also check if they already added a service charge in your bill. In this way, its already a tip.

RULES ARE RULES Unless youre headed to some wasteland governed by outlaws, chances are your destination will have its own set of rules. A simple internet research can save you from a unique tripone that involves a view from the back of a police car.

KNOW WHERE TO STAND-Different countries have various beliefs and traditions that are unwritten social norms. For instance, in Muslim countries, all women are expected to wear a headscarf which they called a hijab. While in the Gulf, crossing your legs or showing the bottom part of your foot is also considered an offensive gesture. The tip here is being sensitive to the local beliefs and culture.

AVOID BACKPACK DISASTERS-We usually carry backpacks when going on a day adventure in our vacation destination. Backpacks became our usual travel companion especially when going on a hike or trek. However, watch your backpack at all times. It might hit the gorgeous person standing next to you.

This is especially true when riding the local bus or trains during rush hour. In cities like Singapore and Shanghai, the trains can be just as crowded as the New York subway or London tube. When carrying your backpack, be considerate and switch it to your front, or rest it at your feet.

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE-To prevent being misunderstood by the locals, think before you talk. No matter how irritated you are with the guy sitting next to you, be sure your words wont be taken the wrong way. Just to give you a heads up, some countries have better grasp of other languages aside from their mother tongue. Filipinos, for instance, are known to be one of the best English-speaking countries in Asia, while a few people from Indonesia speak fluent Dutch. Thus, to avoid being branded as the arrogant tourist, hold your tongue before you speak.

Interaction with different people in a perfect destination is a two-way traffic. Locals also carry a snapshot of your personality and well-being when you step in their territory. No matter how close or far you will go, carry your manners like your undergarments. Be sure you never leave your right-conduct when you leave your home-sweet-home.
