Plastic Surgery And Teenagers The Debate

Plastic Surgery And Teenagers The Debate

Plastic surgery is not just popular among adult men and women

. Many teenagers are also undergoing cosmetic treatments such as breast augmentation and rhinoplasty to ear reshaping and BOTOX injections. While most doctors recommend that plastic surgery patients are at least 18 years of age, some doctors will perform treatment on younger patients. Some procedures, such as ear reshaping and cleft palate repair on children are viewed as more ethical than performing breast augmentation on teenagers.

Reconstructive Procedures

Reconstructive plastic surgery procedures are performed on children, adolescents, and teenagers to repair birth defects, deformities, and scars from injuries. Cleft palate repair is one reconstructive procedure offered by plastic surgeons; some surgeons even perform the procedure on a pro bono basis. Other reconstructive plastic surgery procedures that may be performed on younger patients include skin grafts and mole removal.

Cosmetic Procedures

There is much debate over which plastic surgery procedures can ethically be performed on younger patients. Many teenagers face ridicule and taunting from their peers if they have a large nose, excess fat under the chin, or extremely small breasts. Rhinoplasty, liposuction of the chin and neck, and breast augmentation can safely and effectively treat these flaws. However, many people feel that children and teenagers should wait until they are older before making the decision to undergo procedures that will permanently change their appearance.

The most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures performed on people aged 13 to 19 in 2009 were male breast reduction, ear reshaping, rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, and dermabrasion, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The most commonly performed non-invasive treatment for the same year and age group include laser vein removal, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, Botox injections, and sclerotherapy.

If you are interested in undergoing plastic surgery and you are not yet 18 years of age, contact a plastic surgeon in your area to find out if you are a good candidate for treatment.
