Places You Can Travel From El Calafate

El Calafate, situated in the southern area of Patagonia, is a very popular destination and it is also where you can jump on organized boat tours on Lago Argentino.The town is placed directly on the lake shores which makes it convenient for amazing boat tours. El Calafate can be reached by plane as it has an airport, and there are plenty of accommodation you can choose from once you arrive to the city. The dock from Punta Bandera is very convenient for taking o a boat tour, but there is another possibility you can try. From El Calafate climb on a bus and travel to the Perito Moreno Glacier. There you will stop at Lago Rico, a part of the larger lake. The dock at Bajo de las Sombras is used for embarking on boat tours.
The views of Perito Moreno are amazing and all of the boat tours will take you on a ride around the glacier to enjoy the stunning scenery. At times blocks of ice break from the glacier and fall into the lake creating an incredible show that people riding in boats can view. The surface of the lake shines hues of blues and greens while the hues of the ice chunks vary from blue to white. Some people like to take a sip of the ice water off the glacier for a refreshing beverage.
Perito Moreno is not the only glacier in the area. Embarking on a boat tour from El Calafate can take you around other glaciers such as Upsala, Spegazzi, or Onelli. Pick up your boat from Punta Bandera and prepare for a day full of adventures. While the boat slides across the waters of Lago Argentino, you can take in the views and admire the icebergs floating on the surface. The tour will take you to Upsala, the biggest glacier in the area. From there the boat will lead you to Onelli Bay. Here you can get off the boat and admire the lagoon as well as the Onelli Glacier. This is a great place to stop during your full day tour as here you will find a restaurant to have a meal and relax. Some people prefer to picnic here, but if this is not your thing modern amenities are readily available. The last glacier to visit is Spegazzi and afterward you can go back to El Calafate.
From Upsala you can embark on another cruise towards Estancia Cristina. There you will be able to see the way of living on gaucho ranches, or estancias as they are also called. You will still find working gaucho ranches close to El Calafate; and they are great places to have a meal, ride a horse, and sleep comfortably. Estancia Cristina is one of the most popular gaucho ranches and there you can experience a true Patagonian experience.
