Amarnath Yatra
Amarnath shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at a distance of 145 km away from Srinagar, at an altitude of 4,175 meters. Amarnath cave is 150 feet high and 90 feet long, which is a home to an ice Shiva Linga and it is said that on the full moon day of Shravana (July-August) month, it reaches a height of 6 feet. The cave is open for pilgrimage in the months of July and August as the area remains covered with snow for most part of the year. More than 2 lakh devotees visit Amarnath shrine every year.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Kailash Mansarovar is one of the holiest places of Hindu pilgrimage and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located at an altitude of 6,675 meters in the Western region of Tibet. The best time to visit is from June to September as it is covered with snow for most part of the year. Kailash Mansarovar yatra takes around 28 days to complete from India, out of which 11 days are spent in Chinese territory.
Char Dham Yatra
Char Dham Yatra includes four Hindu holy places situated in the state of Uttarakhand, which attract a large number of tourists every year from far away places.
Badrinath
Badrinath is an abode of Lord Vishnu and is situated on the left bank of Alaknanda river, at altitude of 3,133 meters in Garhwal. It is considered holiest temple among all the four pilgrimage places called Char Dham.
Kedarnath
Kedarnath shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated at an altitude of 3,584 meters on the head of Mandakini river in Uttarkashi. It was built in 8th century and remains open for pilgrimage in the months from May to October, except monsoon season. It is located at a distance of 234 km from Rishikesh.
Gangotri
Gangotri is the origin place of sacred river Ganga, which is located at a height of 3,042 meters in Garhwal hills. It is located at a distance of 105 km from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. The best season to visit Gangotri is April to November except monsoon season.
Yamunotri
Yamunotri is the origin of sacred river Yamuna and is perched at an altitude of 3,165 meters in Garhwal Himalayas. It is located at a distance of 172 km from Dehradun. Trek to this pilgrimage destination is dominated by splendid beauty of dense forests and rugged peaks. The best season of pilgrimage is from April to November, except the months of July and August because of monsoons.
Vaishno Devi Shrine
Vaishno Devi Shrine is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir at an altitude of 1,700 meters. The holy place is dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi and is at a distance of 61 km from Jammu city. The best time to visit is from March to October, except monsoon season.
