Learn About History Of Damghan Before You Make A Trip To Iran

According to Iranian myths, the history of Damghan begins with the construction of

this place by Hooshang, who was credited with the establishment of the Pishdadi dynasty in Iran, and was the great grandson of Keyumars.

The town had many names and one of them is Qoomes. This was originally a province which extended from Sabzevar to Garmsar, with the Alborz mountains bordering the north and the Lut desert in the south. Damghan was the capital of this province until 1st century. When Alexander invaded Iran, it got the name of Hecatompylos, the name the Greeks attributed to all flourishing cities.

The Tappeh Hessar

There are remains of an ancient settlement in the town by the name of Tappeh Hessar. Before you take a trip to Iran, it is interesting to know that the archaeologists Professor Hertzfeld and Dr. Schmidt have studied this historical mound extensively. Studying various layers of this mound, you can learn about the history of Damghan.

You can see glimpses of the Mades dynasty in some layers which was simultaneous with that of Mesopotamia. You can also discover the Achaemenid, Parthian and Seleucid influences in another layer of the Tappeh. It was very famous when the Seleucid and Parthian rulers were on the throne. The Parthian empire had Damghan as its capital under the rule of Arsaces II. The Sassanian remnants can be seen in another layer.

Very Old City

History of Damghan started long time ago as it is evident from the carbon isotope reports in Tappeh Hessar. Many items have been discovered which date back to 7000 years ago. The body of a pregnant woman was found while the Tehran-Mashad railway lines were being expanded, and it is believed to be 7000 years old. Metal has been found in her teeth by scientists. This indicates that she was worshiped as goddess Tootam. This kind of worship existed in the religion followed by the Iranians, Indians and Egyptians a few thousand years back.

When you make a trip to Iran, you will learn that Damghan was destroyed when the Afghans attacked the city in 1723. You can still see some beautiful monuments today like the Tarikhaneh mosque. This is one of the earliest mosques built in Iran after the country converted to the new religion, Islam. The study of the architecture at this structure largely helps with understanding the evolution of Islamic architecture.
