Phuket, the largest island in the country of Thailand
, is perhaps one of the most visited islands on planet earth. It is also the wealthiest island amongst a herd of islands present along the southern coastline. The warmth of the people and the scenic locals of the island truly make it a treat for tourists on vacation. People all across Europe, USA and the entire west are totally caught on by Phuket and are increasing their visits to the island more and more.However, Phuket has had its fair share of tragedies as well. Almost 5 years ago, on December 26th 2004, a powerful tsunami struck the entire southern coastline, causing a tremendous amount of devastation and destruction on the little island. The tragedy was so immense that the after effects can still be felt on the beautiful island of Phuket. And of course, it has left deep marks on the psyches of the people of Phuket. But the question is, has the city been able to forget the past and move on to a new future?
The answer to that question most definitely is, yes, it has. Many resorts in Phuket have been remarkable in its transformation post the deadly tsunami and the efforts have been paying amazing dividends to the tourism of the island. Post the tsunami, number of tourists visiting Phuket has increased more than what it was before the tsunami. The post tsunami devastations can still be seen along the wonderful coastline of the Patong beach though. It is reminiscent of the time when Phuket was tested as a united island, and of how it has survived to tell the tale. Wherever there was destruction, new hotels and cafes have opened up and filled the void that was left behind by the deadly tidal wave.
Along the coastline, the street markets have been put up again and it comes as no surprise that they are bustling and full of life yet again with tourists and foreigners trying to get their hands on a part of the legacy that Phuket has acquired post the tsunami. The disaster management teams who have been working day and night to minimize the effects of the tsunami hit areas have really been helping the island pull back to its original glory and gather attention as it always has been able to do among the world map.
Often it is said that it not how hard you get hit that matters. It is how fast when you get up that matters. And that is exactly the story of Phuket as a united solid unit. It has been able to get up after being hit hard by nature. And it has proved that the will to provide people the best hospitality in the world and give their lives joy works for them. And they are the best at it when it comes to entertaining people from all parts of the world.
