Parenting Unmotivated Children - Dos And Don'ts To Get Your Kid Back On Track

Sometimes unmotivated children are just unable to accept the sacrifices they have to make to achieve a long term goal. They see most things in the short term and because they hate homework, then that is the obstacle.

They cannot see where this is leading so sometimes we have to point out to them that 'no pain no gain' in this case just means keeping their head down to get a certificate to lead them on to their next goal.

As regards homework and studying, we should give their study space top priority and allow them a quiet working area which is far away from the hurly burly of the kitchen and the living room.

Helping them organize it the way they want and encouraging them to keep it free of clutter is also great because it does help them to study better. But 90% of the ideas abut how they want to study and their own methods must come from the teenager and not be imposed by a parent who says that it should be done in a certain way.

Little steps to success. Setting up mini goals is a great way to stay motivated. Once they start seeing results, this is a great motivator. Nothing succeeds like success and they will soon see how they can build on this. It was John Somerville who remarked "When a child is self-motivated, the teacher cannot keep him from learning".

In parenting unmotivated children, you have to decide what role YOU play. Are you a nagger, a nuisance or a source of support? The latter I hope but we have to resist asking them why they have not done a certain task and why it is taking them so long to do it! That is such a turn off for anybody and especially teenagers.

So you offer support. If a child is having problems, why not find out what these are and what is holding them back? Maybe they need more time and they cannot do a chore they were supposed to do. If you want to help, you can do that chore yourself and take the pressure off them. It is easy to do that and helps the child instead of the child having to put up with the third degree.

Another great way to help unmotivated children is to help them program their study period so that breaks are built in at reasonable intervals. You can encourage them to switch off completely during the break, offer them a healthy snack and let them play and relax completely.

These are just a few of the dos and don'ts that we can employ in parenting unmotivated children. If you would like to find some more, why not visit my site and blog below to get some more ideas and programs which can really help unmotivated children to get back on track and stay on it!
