Dealing With Child Attitude Problems - Getting Back In Control Again

I was fascinated to read a recent book on child attitude problems recently. This book is by Michele Borba and is called Don't Give Me That Attitude!: 24 Rude, Selfish, Insensitive Things Kids Do and How to Stop Them. The title sums up the problems that we parents often face when all the negative traits of a child's character and behavior are dominant. We begin to despair if we can ever get back the loving, kind and well behaved child we used to have.

In dealing with child attitude issues where the child is arrogant, rude, insensitive and lazy, there is always the problem of how to react. We need step by step guidelines and checklists to follow. Then we need to give it time and not give up after three days. We should be aiming for a timescale of at least three weeks if we are to see any change in our child's behavior.

We may try in vain to change child attitude problems by telling the child that this is not the way to behave. Behave is the key word here because we have to work on how we are going to give our child those skills that will help him to change his behavior and his whole outlook in the world.

I know a lot of parenting experts who recommend that the child keeps a sort of gratitude journal in which he lists the things he should be grateful for, including super parents! It is thought that negative and anti social attitudes stem from a lack of appreciation of what the child has.

Then there are parents who always insist that their children are allowed to have a choice in selecting what chores they want to do and also in what the rules are in the house, to a certain extent. They cannot decide everything but if they are a part of the decision making process, you will find that child attitude problems start to diminish.

The idea that a child with attitude problems can actually earn back privileges he lost through a lousy child attitude is another way of getting the child to improve his behavior.

As you will notice, all these tips are also directed at instilling in the child a sense of responsibility which is key to changing behavior and attitude. Gradually once you have started to implement these changes and others in the course I recommend below, you will begin to see results and be able to get back in control again.
