Paper Towns Review

Quentin Jacobsen, a.k.a. Q, is a senior of uncertain caste at Winter Park High School in Orlando, Florida. He hangs with the band crowd but does not play in the band. His erstwhile girlfriend has dumped him. Q's two close male friends, Ben and Radar, also are quasi-losers on the high school social scale. Notably, Q once was childhood pals with his next door neighbor and classmate, Margo Roth Spiegelman. Now he is reduced to worshipping and fantasizing about her from afar. Margo sits effortlesslybut, as it happens, uneasilyatop the topmost caste at Winter Park High. She has turned out to be beautiful, popular, and famous for making statements with quirky stunts and risky adventures.

As graduation looms, the social fabric of Winter Park High begins to unravel for Q, and Margo is the main agent of change. To Q's astonishment, she appears one night with a blackened face and ninja attire at Q's bedroom Replica Tag Heuer window to recruit him (and his mother's minivan) for a meticulously planned eleven-point night of mischief. "I have to do eleven things tonight, and at least five of them involve a getaway man" (p. 26). Stunned, flattered, but risk-averse, he needs some convincing. "No felonies," she promises. Q correctly disbelieves that assurance, but the allure of the girl of his dreams proves irresistible.

Margo and Q wreak bold and clever havoc all night long, employing catfish, an extra-large jar of Vaseline, an anonymous telephone call, "flash" photography, a tube of depilatory cream, and petty theft. The victims include Margo's handsome, popular boyfriend, Jason, who she has discovered is betraying her; Margo's "best friend" whose favors Jason now is sampling; Margo's "other best friend," Lacey, who Margo believes must have known but failed to warn her; and the school bully.

Margo then disappears, literally. Q is alarmed and concerned, but he stands alone. Margo's unsuitable, self-centered parents have been worn out by the history of her antics. They view her latest departure as a relief and probably another stunt, vowing never to let her back in the house. The police won't look for her, noting that Margo is now 18 and therefore free to come and go as she pleases. Most school friends roll their eyes at what appears to be another "Look at me!" Margo trick. They are intent on not letting a drama-queen incident spoil either the prom or graduation. Q fears that Margo may truly be suicidal and worries about just what she does mean, particularly in light of his recollection of some long-ago comments following the 9-year-old pals' chilling discovery of a suicide's body. Privately snooping in her room, Q finds that Margo has left some subtle but alarming clues. Chief among them is a highlighted Cartier Roadster Replica Watches copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. Highlighted language leads Q to a slip of paper that Margo hid for him to find. It contains the address of a vermin-infested, abandoned building in which she has spent private hours for years. Clues in the building combined with Leaves of Grass send Q on an emotional quest and on a physical road trip to come to know Margo as she really is (or was), instead of as he has imagined her for years.

John Greene writes with great skill. His dialogue is always clever and occasionally brilliant. The four friends are verbally quicker and funnier than any likely teenager but about as quick and funny as most teenagers aspire to be, successfully or not. The storytelling is at its best and funniest during the ninja adventure, which ultimately plays a key role in upsetting the "paper" social order at Winter Park High School and laying a foundation for the paper towns concept. After Margo disappears, the book turns into a detective story with some riveting moments but a much slower pace to accommodate a few false leads and to develop clues and insights through Q's interesting exploration and growing comprehension of Leaves of Grass. Paper Towns would make a good companion piece with Leaves of Grass to introduce Whitman and his free-spirited poetry to a mature junior or senior English class. Some readers may find the author's use of language and sexual content objectionable, making this book more appropriate for older young adultsdefinitely not a middle school read.
