Optimizing The Online Seminar Experience
Your online seminar experience can be as valuable as an onsite one
, but only if you plan for it. Start early and be ready for the seminar before it's scheduled to begin.Your Online Seminar Environment
First of all, make certain all your equipment is in working order. Is your computer ready to go with enough memory to receive the signal at full strength? A monitor of at least 19 inches is not a necessity, but it is useful. Make certain your computer is working at optimum capacity. Check out your camera and make certain it is working. What about your microphone? Test everything early. You don't want to be caught short.
Where will you be attending? Will you be in your office? Do you share your office with anyone? If so, you need to make arrangements for quiet and privacy while the seminar is on. Alert your secretary or receptionist or the person who fields your calls that you will not be able to take them for the duration of the seminar. Turn off your telephone or turn on your answering machine.
Preparing for the Training
Has the presenter made assignments to be done before the seminar? Make certain you understand them and have completed them early so you'll be prepared to ask questions and participate in the discussions.
Do some reading ahead of time and make notes about any questions you have regarding the topic. Also, be prepared to participate in discussions.
Do you know the presenter? If not, it would be worth your while to google his or her name and get to know as much about the person as you can before hand. Knowing the speaker's background will help make the presentation real and will help you understand and remember the points he or she makes.
Prepare yourself. Remember that the purpose of the seminar is to improve your knowledge and skills so you can do your job better. However, the opportunity to attend a seminar is an opportunity not only to build your resume but to sharpen your skills so you will be prepared to advance beyond your current position. The people who move up are those who continue to grow in their jobs.
Taking Notes
Prepare to take notes during the seminar. You can either use a pencil and a pad or you can hook up another computer such as a laptop and make notes on it.
Preserve as much of the seminar on disc as possible so you can go back over the material from time to time. If the presenter prohibits that, find out whether there is a disc available for sale that will give you good review materials. Some presenters make Xerox copies of the screens available to attendees.
Follow-up
Your work is not done when the seminar is over. Review what was covered as soon as possible to reinforce your grasp of the information. If you can pass the information on to other employees, so much the better. You will remember more of it if you teach it. Besides, by sharing with other employees, the cost/benefit ratio of the summer is enhanced.
Online seminars have opened up opportunities for more training not available in the past. It's wise to engage in as many of these as you can, not only to be more productive for your company but to advance yourself and your own career.
