The city of Orange has the luck to be set right beneath the extinct volcano Mt. Canobolas. This placement allows for extraordinary beauty and a wonderful weekend getaway spot. The aborigines named this place and it means twin shoulders or twin heads.
The settlers came when the gold was found. The people built the town as they discovered their future. Early in the eighteen hundreds after the gold was gone the ground became the place for riches to be found. The agricultural grew with the growing of peaches, cherries, apricots, plums, pears, and bushels of apples. In fact while the name of the city would make you expect that oranges were grown here they were not. The city was named as a nod to Prince Orange of Denmark.
With this area producing so much fruit they reached a point when ten percent of all the apples for Australia were gown here. Fruit still hangs on the trees and is produced here. But the charm of this city lies with the European influences in its architecture and design. While visiting you feel as if you have been swept away to a small village in Europe.

The fact that Orange has been called Australian Fruit Basket is apparent with this being the spot for the festival.

Mt. Canobolas offers not only a clear view of the area but a delicious breath of fresh air. Hike to the top and look down on the grand display of orchards and fruit below you. The man made Lake Canobolas lets you cool off on a hot day or simply enjoy the sun glinting off the water. It is a wonderful place to have a picnic and swim.
