More and more people are opting to book a private villa or apartment for their holiday in Cyprus as opposed to a hotel for various reasons:

Plan meal times at the times that suit you! With a large choice of restaurants/snack bars offering home delivery you can avoid sometimes repetitive hotel food. Alternatively you can cook your own meals or eat out!
Tailor made holidays: With holiday rentals situated throughout the island including picturesque villages you can spend one week near the beach and the next in a typical mountain resort.
Good standard of properties. Well furnished and fully equipped with everything you should need for your stay.
Independance. You can relax by your own private pool, enjoy home BBQs and come and go unnoticed.
Types of property available:
Beach apartments within a complex with communal swimming pool. Ideal for families and groups as these are usually situated within a resort so amenities and the beach are nearby. Apartments are available from simple one or two bedroom properties to luxurious 4 bedroom penthouses on the beach.
Private villas. These usually offer 3 or 4 bedrooms, although you can find larger villas with up to 7 bedrooms. Normally they will have either a private swimming pool or a communal pool. Locations vary from seafront, quiet suburbs and villages.
Village properties. You can opt to book a luxury villa or simple village house in various locations. Properties in these areas also tend to be lower in price and the beach in Cyprus is never too far away. For instance Limassol is only a 45 minute drive from the Troodos mountains.
How to find / book holiday villas or apartments:
Search the internet, there are many private owners who will advertise either through an agent or privately.
Through your travel agent. They will incur extras costs of course but they will usually have a good idea of the standard and location of the property.
Estate agents. In Cyprus many estate agents will offer both long term rentals and holiday rentals.
Booking your holiday apartment or villa:
You can either book property direct with the owner or through an agent in Cyprus. The advantages of booking directly through the owner is that it will be a little cheaper, however an owner will always promote their property as being the best and as they are not experts in the field cannot advise you on whether or not the location etc will be suitable for your needs.
When booking through an agent, they will send you all the relevant information, offer properties that meet your criteria and if you encounter any problems during your stay you have their back up. They will also have first hand knowledge of the property and be able to advise you on the location and property features.
However you decide to book your holiday please follow this advise:
Ensure you are given all the information regarding the standard of the property, how far away the nearest supermarket is, the beach, how far from the town, is the property fully equipped (everything down to an iron, cutlery, crockery enough for the amount of people in the booking).
Check if there are any extra costs. Some properties will charge you for the electricity used for instance or if you require internet access.
Ensure you have confirmation of arrival and departure dates in writing.
Check that the property is child friendly where applicable (ie is there a barrier around the pool, is there a children's pool, can they fit safety gates on stairs).
Make sure you have a 24 hour contact number and that there are clear driving instructions for your arrival to the property, and instructions for where the key will be found! If you are staying in a compelx you may need a code or remote control to gain access into the complex.
