Nintendo DSi: The Best Review

While Nintendo has been dominating the home gaming market with the Nintendo Wii

, they have also been in control of the portable gaming market with the Nintendo DS and DS Lite. They have recently upgraded this line with the DSi which has many features that may, or may not, incentivize you to upgrade. The Nintendo DSi was released to the public in April of 2009 and has been selling like hotcakes since its release. It is the third incarnation of the Nintendo DS product line and has many new features that its predecessors do not. One critical component, and challenge for manufactures, in this video game genre is to pack a lot of punch in the smallest amount of space possible. People essentially want to play the Top Wii Games on a portable device. Thus, this upgrade of the Nintendo attempts just that: power and portability. In the DSi, we find Nintendo adding many more features while making this the thinnest in all of the DS product line. If the DS Lite did well for portability, the DSi (or should we call it the DS Lighter?) will do even better. If you have used either previous version of this Nintendo portable video game system, the first thing that you will immediately notice is the screen. Somehow, even though they made the DSi even lighter, they were able to provide us with a larger screen than previous versions. For me, this is a huge selling point. Video games are primarily visual and the challenge in the portable video game market is to make the games as visually appealing as possible. One other huge improvement with this product is the "i" in the DSi. The DSi boasts the ability to buy and download games directly from the Internet. This is a huge time saver and, in the end, a big money saver. Since stores don't actually have to stock a product, these games for the DSi are noticeably less expensive. Over time, this makes the initial cost of the DSi less prohibitive. Other upgrades and improvements with this product include two cameras, one outward facing and one inward facing, digital editing software, faster internal components, new games designed just for this version, and improved audio for playing and manipulating songs or your own recordings. These improvements then beg the question: Is it worth upgrading if you already have a previous version of the DS? If you are someone who always must have the newest gaming system, the answer is absolutely. However, you need to be aware of two major drawbacks. The new system has a shorter battery life and does not allow you to play old Game Boy Advanced Games which some people still enjoy. If you use the DS frequently, I would recommend upgrading simply for the much improved screen and the ability to get some new games via the Internet. As for the new camera and audio features, I will stick to taking photos with the best digital cameras and playing music on my iPod. These devices focus specifically on these tasks and do a much better job than a portable gaming system. There is one little extra piece of information that remains somewhat hidden and may very well affect your decision, especially if you want to upgrade for the bigger screen. A newer version of the DSi, with a screen 2 inches bigger, has already been released in Japan and will hit stores in America in the first quarter of 2010.
