Ninja History & Training - The 3 General "types" Of Ninja Within The Art Of Ninjutsu

? Are you looking for more than movie and comic book definitions and ideas? If you are then this article may help to clear up a common misconception about the Ninja. That is the idea that all Ninja dressed up in black outfits, carried weapons, acted, and operated the same way.

Sorry. Just isn't true.

And, understanding the reality behind the Ninja's art, will allow you to break through the limiting stereotype that points to such a small part of the power that is Ninjutsu - also known as Ninpo, in it's higher, life-empowering form.

From a traditional standpoint, there can be seen to be three general classifications within the clans of the people that we have come to call "Ninja." And, if we can understand the necessity for having not only different levels of rank and command, but also different types of skills and expertise necessary in running an undercover, secret, clandestine network of information-gatherers, then we can really start to understand the art and it's elements, rather than remaining caged by ignorance and misinformation.

There were 3 types of Ninja within each "family" or organization. The so-called "rank" or "type" of Ninja pointed to not only his or her job, but also the number present within the group.

The 3 levels of Ninja practitioner are:

Jonin - Literally, "high-man," the Jonin is the head of the organization. But, rather than just being the "best" as some would believe, the Jonin was not really a "fighter" or operative as we normally think of Ninja. He was the leader and, most often "unknown" to the rest of the clan as the "leader." This anonimity allowed for his safety should any of the lower operatives be caught or tortured.

The primary job of the Jonin is to monitor social, political, and cultural conditions, create alliances, and decide for whom the family would work for an assist. To be able to carry out the requirements of his position, the Jonin was much more than a warrior. He was also required to view life and his world from the clarity of enlightened perspective. So, as such, he was more like a warrior-philosopher, than merely an agent sneaking into castles to learn the secrets of the enemy - or to act as some sort of super-hero in black clothing as modern movies would make the Ninja appear.

Chunin - These are the "field commanders" or the supervisors who received the orders and requirements from the Jonin, and then selected the appropriate agents to carry out the "missions" that were required. Again, these Ninja could be seen to be very much like the modern-day "handlers" or field agents that work for many of the world's intelligence organizations.

The job of these Ninja was two-fold: 1) to setup the missions necessary to obtain the information or results determined by the Jonin, and... 2) to help to protect the anonimity of the Jonin himself. The Ninja who acted as chunin, "middle-men," developed a keen sense of "strategic-thinking," as their primary tool. They were adept at not only choosing among the clan's field agents, but also at recruiting new operatives, and...

...employing individuals as agents who didn;t even know they were working for the cl;an!

Genin - This is the "low-man," the person that we have come to recognize as a Ninja. The job of the genin was to carry out the orders of the chunin, and most of these agents never knew who they was at the head of the orders or missions, or even the cause that they were serving.

Theirs was a life of obedience and trust in the wisdom of their Jonin, in doing what was best for the clan as a whole.

The genin's primary role was to be well-trained in the weapons, techniques, skills, and tactics that would allow him or her to accomplish their mission. And, while there were teams of operatives sent out in the field, often, 2 or more genin were given the very same task, but didn't know that they weren't the only one working on getting the information. This served to do two important things.

First, it gave the higher level chunin and ultimately the jonin, a much more clear picture of the situation - because it was highly unlikely that the genin involved all approached or garnered their information from the same vantage point, person, or perspective. It also allowed the leaders to discover any traitors or enemy spies who may have worked their way into the clan. If 3 genin were sent out, and 1 of them returned with information that was different from what the other 2 had discovered - he or she would likely be watch and "set-up" to further expose themselves and their true intentions.
