Moon Cake Festival - The Celebration of Tradition
The 15th of August holds an important place in the Chinese calendar. It is marked for the celebration of the Chung Chui - what is known as A Mid-Autumn Festival. One of the biggest festivals to be celebrated, it is said to correspond with the Western traditions regarding harvest festivals. But the Chinese celebrations are rather different than their counter parts. This special occasion also known as the Moon Cake Festival has in fact little to do with harvesting but more to do with the Chinese traditions of old. The philosophy behind the festival is that the union of nature with that of the spirit of man is needed for balanced and harmonious living. This is a fundamental principle of Taoism that is practiced by the people of China.
The festival is given the name Moon Cake Festival mainly because of the sweet cake specially made for these celebrations. Also known as Yueh Ping, this delicacy is prepared by filling ground lotus seeds, sesame seeds and duck eggs into a moon shaped cake. There are many stories regarding the birth of these cakes. Most believe it started during the 14th century when the country was under siege from the Mongols. The moon cakes were used in a strategy that involved the population in a revolt against the enemy thus enabling the Emperor-to-be to take the throne.
The moon itself plays an important role in these festivities. Seeing a full moon is believed to be an auspicious sign. The Chinese have a story saying that there is a Lady on the Moon and she is in fact the first person to ever visit this planetary orb bearing the pill of immortal life. Another tale goes that there's an old man on the moon. Yueh Lao Yeh as he is also known is believe to be the preparer of marriages between the Chinese people. During the Moon Festival many people make their way up hills or to clear spaces where they can see the moon, thus being able to make a wish upon it. The sighting of the moon is celebrated by stringing up traditional red lanterns in various shapes.
