Misletoe As A Cure For Mesothelioma
This autumn London will play host to The 5th Mesothelioma UK Patient & Carer Day
, which will be held on the 2nd Oct, at the Novotel, St Pancras.
This annual event attempts to give mesothelioma patients, carers and families the chance to share their experiences of living with the condition. There is a chance to raise issues and ask questions and many expert speakers participate to provide up to date and unbiased information and guidance.
A key highlight of this year's event is Dr Maurice Orange from Attwood Clinic's talk about mistletoe therapy as a treatment for mesothelioma. For the last 80 years, extracts of mistletoe have been a complementary therapy in the treatment of several types of cancer.
Mistletoe extract is no quick fix, and as with nearly all medical treatments, mistletoe has a different affect on different people, although it has been found to stimulate the immune system, which strengthens the body's natural defences, meaning infection and illness can be more successfully fought.
It can also induce apoptosis in cancer cells, this is where cells self destruct and help to stop or, in some cases, reverse tumour growth. Mistletoe can protect DNA in healthy cells from the harmful effects of cell toxins. This can make the effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy more tolerable as it can reduce the damage to healthy cells during such treatments.
Finally, mistletoe can induce an inflammatory reaction, together with a mild fever. This can be a welcome effect for cancer patients as they often feel the cold much easier and keeping warm is important to encourage an active immune system and a well functioning metabolism.
Aside from these affects, it has also been shown that mistletoe has a positive effect on a cancer patient's quality of life. Patients have reported feeling stronger, more able to resist infections, have gained weight and find their appetite returning after long periods of not being hungry.
