How many times a day should I brush my teeth?

Most parents would tell their children they have to brush their teeth as often as possible or at least three times a day. This means that they will need to take a side trip to the bathroom to brush their teeth after every major meal. Unfortunately, for school-going children, this is possible, but not desirable. After all, not many teenagers would be caught dead brushing their teeth in the middle of the day.

In the same manner, people who have a 9 to 5 job, or work freelance in the field, dont have time for dental care in the middle of the day. This means, they either dont want to bring around a dental care travel kit, or theyre just too busy to stop and brush.

There are some who, in this view of this situation, recommend brushing twice a day: when you get up in the morning, and before you sleep at night. In addition to this though, it is important to note that brushing alone will not keep your teeth clean.

Aside from brushing, you will have to floss and gargle with a good mouthwash. In fact, flossing and using a mouthwash can be more effective midday than brushing. Thus, if you can carry with you those floss picks or a floss pack in your pocket, youre good to go. You can wash out the food debris with simple old tap water.

What makes flossing during the day important is the fact that you dont allow food to stay lodged between your teeth. This is what causes plaque build-up that can turn into calculus. Once plaque hardens, you cant remove it with brushing. You will need to go to the dentist for help. Many people like to pack a string of floss in a tiny plastic bag, and carry it around in their wallet. It saves them from anything bulky in their pocket or bag. Also, a wallet is one of the items you carry around daily that you value, so it works to have it in there.

Making sure your teeth are clean more than it is not is important because as you grow older, your teeth become more prone to cracks and damage from old age. Teeth grow old too, as do your gums and the bones supporting your teeth. If you brush at least twice a day, you minimize risk when you reach your senior years.

In addition, there have been links between poor dental care resulting in loss of memory and even dementia. There are even studies that point to poor oral care as a reason for increased blood pressure and low sperm count. This is because when you suffer from decaying teeth or bleeding gums, your arteries are slowly being damaged as well.

The number of times you brush your teeth is not so important as the manner you brush your teeth. If you just tend to rush through the process and assume that the minty taste in your mouth indicates your teeth are clean, then you are going to be badly disappointed soon enough.

Thus, brush 3 times a day if you eat 3 main meals a day. However, if you enjoy munching on snacks and candy all day long, then you must brush more than 3 times a day.
