. "Get out of my way Tinsel Teeth," says another passing classmate. From behind someone shouts, "Nice look Zipper Lips!" You begin to sweat. Why is everyone looking at you?
Does this seem familiar? Maybe this is a scene from your eighth grade experience in middle school. Braces can often attract unnecessary nicknames and cause a person to feel uncomfortable with their appearance. Children often only see the social awkwardness and discomfort, not the future benefits of braces. When our teeth come in as we grow-up, sometimes they position themselves incorrectly. This can cause an overbite or under-bite and pain. Braces not only correct teeth positioning for a healthier mouth, but by doing so, braces leave the patient with a much more attractive smile. This is one of the reasons braces have become so popular today, even with adults. People are constantly trying to improve their appearance and braces have become readily available. Many insurance policies even cover their cost.
How do braces work? In the late eighteen hundreds, scientists hypothesized about the application of slow constant forces to position teeth around the mouth. This became the founding idea to the system of brackets and wires. By applying steady small forces to each tooth, the teeth are able to respond biologically and actually start remodeling their bones. The body will essentially start forming new bone and reabsorbing older bone. This means braces do not simply push teeth around, they allow your mouth to reform itself to the position of the teeth. By providing a very slow gradual pushing and tugging process on teeth, braces take anywhere from six months to six years before they can be removed. The length of time braces stay installed is uncomfortable. Having metal all over your mouth can cause cuts and sores to form inside the cheeks. Dental hygiene is harder to maintain with braces, bacteria now have even more places to hide. Braces typically come as a series of stainless steel brackets and wires. The patient can chose the color of rubber-bands to be placed over each bracket. This offers a small variety in how your braces look. Other types of braces exist. For easier orthodontic cases, people can chose to use braces that look like clear mouth guards that blend in with the teeth. These are often even only worn at night. This is a much more discreet way to go about correcting your teeth. This type of braces requires a lot of self-discipline. The patient has to remember to put them in every day, where as the metal kind are installed and cannot be removed. Braces provide many health benefits, but are a sacrifice to wear.
