Mini Traveler From The 60S Is Alive As Clubman
MINI Clubman is inspired by the Mini Traveller from the sixties. However, apart from the design it has all the aspects of a modern car. It is much larger and practical than the original Traveller. One cant find any direct rivals to the Clubman. It is aimed at the buyers who want to go for something different. Its unique features include the side suicide door and side hinged double doors at the back. In other words Clubman is a MINI turned into a practical wagon. The Clubman is offered in full MINI Cooper, One and Cooper S trim levels with option of diesel and petrol engines. The John Cooper Works is available in petrol only. The luxury model is Hampton Clubman. Buyers are also offered a long list of customisation options.
The Clubmans design is either love it or hate it type. The drivers side has a rear hinged back door called the Clubdoor by MINI. The original traveler used to have a top hinged door which is replaced by the barn doors in Clubman. One can question the looks or design of the car as much as they want to, but in my view the unique engineering work is appreciable. The owner will have the feeling of having something that is not very common. The dashboard is nothing different than any other MINI.
Despite being a front wheel drive car, the Clubman steers very well. The traction is also at high level making the drive safe and enjoyable. The longer wheelbase and stiffer suspension makes the ride a little jittery, therefore if you are going for something extra comfortable the Clubman is not the right choice, on the other hand if you want to have fun while normal driving go for it. The choice of the engines are the same as the hatch. The best option is the One D, with 103g/km of carbon emissions keeping the road tax bill to minimum returning an excellent ratio of performance and cost. MINI is owned by BMW and has an excellent reliability record. The MINI hatch benefits from the five Star Euro NCAP rating. Though the shape of Clubman might be questionable for some, the materials used are of high quality and the car is well built. All of the models are equipped with front, side and curtain airbags.
There are many optional security features available including electronic stability control, lane assistance, parking sensors and many more. The longer length of the Paceman gives extra legroom at the back. It has 260 litres of boot space which increases to 930 litres on folding the rear seats. The Clubdoor is only on the passenger side which is not that practical when pickuing up or dropping off children or even adults. The barn doors restrict visibility. Having said that, once the passengers are inside the car it accommodates them comfortably and provides nice headroom for tall passengers. The difference in price between the Clubman and a normal MINI hatchback of same specs is around 1000. The running costs are relatively low thanks to the highly fuel efficient diesel engines and strong residuals. The Cooper S and John Cooper Works are premium and very fast on the road. Overall it doesnt cost much to run a Clubman despite being a high class car.
