Mind Relaxation Techniques: Because Your Mind Deserves A Break Too

Your body gets rest at night while you sleep. But this isn't always the case for your mind - it can end up working long hours, which takes its toll on you. This may manifest as dreams or nightmares or restless nights but whatever the reason, it's worth taking the time out to learn some mind relaxation techniques to help you unwind. It's almost like giving your mind a spa day when you get these right!

Just slow down for once

The temptation with our modern day lives is to rush around like the proverbial fly, dashing from place to place and never giving ourselves chance to rest and chill out. This goes even more so for our minds because they have to look after so much of what we're doing. Consciously slowing down, even if it's only for 15 or 20 minutes, will give your mind as well as your body chance to relax.

Breath deeply

Yup, that old chestnut. Just because it's something you've heard over and over again doesn't mean that it doesn't work. Whenever you find your mind getting to over-worked, take a short time to concentrate on your breathing. Taking a few, slow, deep breaths can work even when you haven't got time for anything longer or more complicated.

Relax those muscles

If you've got the chance (15 minutes or so is fine) then go through a progressive muscle relaxation for your whole body. Working from your toes to the crown of your head or in the opposite direction, relax each part of your body in turn and then move on to the next part, keeping any earlier parts relaxed. This is often best done with a guided MP3 so that you don't end up spending more time working out which body part is next than you do relaxing. This whole body relaxation will include your mind so you'll end up with it as a mind relaxation technique as a bonus.
