Australia has more than its fair share of beautiful destinations and Merimbula is right up there with the best of them

. Beaches, watersports, scenery, ancient forests, wildlife and lagoons will have you returning time and time again to this interesting and wild part of the New South Wales coast.

Merimbula is a place that can accommodate all types of visitors, from couples and honeymooners and single travellers to retirees and those with young families. The beaches in the area are plentiful, the main one located just a few minutes walk from the town is a long sandy stretch that goes all the way to Pambula beach.

Sunbathing, swimming and surfing are perfect in the warm waters and in summer it hosts the annual 'Mambo Classic' event featuring stand up surfing, kite surfing, and wave sailing and attracting athletes from all over the country to compete. During the summer months the beach has lifeguards patrolling so you can relax if you have older kids who like to swim, surfing is immensely popular in this area and you'll see surfers of all levels riding the waves.

Magic Mountain is a must if you have kids, with a choice of water slides, rollercoaster rides and go-karts, it even has a maze and there's a toddler pool for the really little ones. Take a leisurely trek along the mountain wilderness track with a picnic, or buy something delicious at one of the restaurants.

Potoroo Palace is an animal education sanctuary whose aim is to improve the habitats and well-being of native animals and educate the local community on the importance of conservation in Australia. See mammals, birds and reptiles and feed the kangaroos and wallabies - you can easily spend the whole day here.

The Montreal Goldfield is a place that will interest every member of the family, set in native forest it tells the history of the gold rush and gives the opportunity to spot sugar gliders, bats, possums, lizards and a sundry assortment of bird life.

Back Lake is an ideal place for those with families as the water is safe for swimming and there's lots of other activities available, including fishing, snorkelling, bush-walking, surfing and exploring the wildlife. Younger children will have fun spending hours amongst the rockpools at the water's edge, and parents seeking peace and quiet can bring their book and find themselves a quiet place to settle whilst admiring the views over Short Point bay.

Merimbula caters to families by providing plenty of child-friendly accommodation near to the beach and convenient for the shops and other facilities the town has to offer. Renting a house or apartment for your trip makes sense when you travel with your family as it offers privacy and has the feeling of being at home but the novelty of a new place. Houses with gardens and 2 or 3 bedrooms can be booked at affordable prices and are comfortably furnished with extra cots and high chairs supplied if requested.

Cabins and caravan parks are generally the closest accommodation you can find to the beach. If you're looking for a cheap and cheerful holiday where the kids can get to the beach every day then this might be the option for you. Self-catering cabins can be booked to suit all budgets and are conveniently located for the boardwalk and local amenities. Equipped with TV's, fridges and microwaves they offer a great way to save money and generally also provide a children's playground, tennis courts, BBQ and laundry facilities.

If you like the idea of being away from it all and want privacy, then book the family into a self-contained cottage with a garden and peaceful environment with lots of space for everyone to run around. Although it takes longer to reach the beaches and facilities in the town the kids will have fun spotting various native animals and appreciating nature.
