A Checklist For Buying A Sound System

A checklist for buying a sound system

Investing in a sound system for your business or entertainment venue is not a transaction to be carried out lightly. Sound systems are expensive and should last you for many years. So before spending a lot of money on any system it is crucial to follow a simple but thorough checklist.

Firstly, have a very comprehensive list of what you will be using the sound system for. Will it be needed for varying uses or always be delivering the same service at the same volume. In a church, for example you may need to amplify your pulpit for the congregation to hear the service clearly. But you may also need to consider uses of the sound system for a variety of occasions such as carol services, weddings and christenings. There are many types of microphones and microphone installation methods, so if you need a more flexible set up, do make your installation company aware of this. Of course you will also need to aware of potential future uses of the system as this may change once it is installed, which can make it very difficult and even more costly to adapt wiring and equipment later.

Once you have identified the need for the system, you will then need to work out where the speakers will need to be. Or rather who they need to deliver amplified sound too. Is there a particular part of your room or space that will need its own speaker or will a simple stereo set up be adequately serve the whole room. So what we are looking at here is the space the speakers will have to fill and whether there may be areas that need extra amplification. Again, churches can be rather tricky given the architecture and typical layout of the pews and choral stands.

Aesthetics may also be an issue for you. Perhaps you do not want your sound system to be too noticeable or intrusive on the space it is installed in. Of course, the size of the speakers will have to match the size of the room both on terms of power and volume, but also make sure that they look and feel right in the room.

A sound system does not only involve speakers and microphones. There is a gamut of equipment that comes with a system. Most importantly is the amplification unit. This needs well ventilated space and it needs to be able to be secure. So identify where will be the best place for you to have all the gear necessary for your requirements. Again church sound systems will need a side room or discrete area to house all the parts of your PA system.
