Planning a holiday on Menorca, thinking Villa or Hotel?
A first flight over Menorca or these days a "fly over" using one of the online maps with aerial images shows you two things. Firstly how sparsely populated it is and how little of the coast line is developed. Secondly you won't see carpets of hotels as in some other spanish holiday destinations. What you will see though are lots of villas on Menorca.
The intact nature, lack of mass tourism hotel holiday crowds are why many of the islands fans prefer their menorca holiday in a Villa. There is nothing quite like a villa to provide a relaxing holiday. Nobody to tell you when to eat, when to leave your room, when the pool is closed and of course there is the privacy. There's a lot more space and if the other guests are annoying - you can just stop their pocket money for a week!
Villas with private pools offer children hours of entertainment and mums and dads can keep a relaxed eye on them from the sun lounger or the shaded terrace sipping a cooled drink. Still, I have never met a child yet,toddler or "uber cool" teenager that doesn't like the beach and sea so don't plan on never leaving the villa pool patio!
The beach resorts on Menorca offer the perfect beach holiday and more. A hire car will show you just how much Menorca has to offer and because the island is so small there 's less 'when are we going to get there...' coming from the back seats!
The holiday resorts in Menorca vary who they cater for. Some are newer and have more Hotels serving packaged holiday guests while the older resorts have, smaller family run hotels and mostly private holiday villas and apartments. Don't believe it? 'fly over' on an online map. If you are the type that does leave the villa grounds then choosing the right resort will be important to you so do some research in advance.
The island has a strong conservation movement restricting new villa and holiday developments, rightly so. Those who've been coming to the island for years know that an older build villa is probably in the best location where new villa builds ( if allowed at all ) have been pushed out to the fringes.
A two week stay should include a hire car at least for a few days. Visit some sights and then bring back a meal to enjoy in your holiday villa. There are specialist places now selling homemade ready made menorca meals ( forget what you tasted in the uk, this very good food ) and many menu del Dias and menu del Noches can be had to take away - just say the magic words? 'a Emporter/Para Levarpor favor?' Actually you will see the locals do this for Sunday family meals.
But villa holidays are expensive? Well the per person price will probably surprise you. And the flight component to a Menorca holiday has ALWAYS been high whether you stay in a hotel package or villa.
