The first success story in India, the Maruti 800 had or rather has a long life. But twenty years later it is beaten in its own game by (no surprises there) its sibling. The Maruti Alto has etched a track record of its own by being the highest sold car in India. Why is this car so sought after Suzuki has created a simple yet elegant car in the Maruti Alto. The design is basic and probably that's why it works. The chunky bumpers are an Indian addition and are aesthetically good. The Alto resembles the 800 in some parts but overall is a decent looking package. Inside the car the interiors though a little cheap look reliable and built to last. The upholstery is not satisfying one bit. The displays are large, clear and minimal.
The 800 cc, 3 cylinder engine has multi point fuel injection and produces 47 bhp at 6000 rpm and 62 Nm at 3000 rpm. As a basic transport in India, this is satisfying inside the city. The efficient engine returns 12.5 kpl in the city and 17.2 kpl in the highway. This is another key to the Alto's success.Coming to the best part first, the turning radius of the Alto is very small. The car is agile too with the steering feeling like a videogame console.
The power shortage is imminent with the engine crying its guts out very frequently. Switching off the air conditioner does improve the power delivery a little. Cornering and high speed maneuvering are best avoided in the Alto.
