The civil war images preserved here are one of a kind. The ravages of the war could be made out from the surrounding homes as well with their battered walls. The old homes stated to be preserved around 1920. It was communal feeling and sense of citizenship that drove a group of men to save them from utter destruction. There are many houses. Many known and non descript houses were restored. The Edmondston-Alston and the Aiken-Rhett House is a must see.

The gardens here look straight out of Narnia. Swamps, stone bridges, sculpture, tomb, all give a fairytale picture. The charm lies in the fact that these plantation gardens are rather old and it is quite evident from the over grown trees and old shrubs. The Plantation house was burned during the Civil War. The Magnolia plantation house today stands as a modern building as nothing is left after the old building caught fire. However the garden with its old world charm still attracts tourists in hordes. The Draytona Hall is another old plantation house which was constructed in 1738. It was owned by the Drayton members till as late as 1975.Now it is a heritage property with wood carvings that is considered one of the best in the whole of America.

Charleston can well be said as a city of churches. The original St Philip church was constructed in 1681 and was rebuilt again in 1723 after it was destroyed by a hurricane. It was again reconstructed in 1850. Then there is the St Michael's Episcopal Church which is also the oldest church in the city. Tuscan columns, portico style construction, and a steeple are the main architectural characteristics of the church. You can also visit the Circular Congregational Church was constructed in 1892.
