Malta, The Mediterranean's More Exclusive Summer Clubbing Scene

Malta, The Mediterranean's More Exclusive Summer Clubbing Scene

Malta is not Ayia Napa, nor Ibiza when it comes to summer clubbing in the Mediterranean

. Malta's club scene may have exploded in the last decade, but it hasn't the tarnished, hackneyed nor 'been there, done that' feel to it of other more renowned dance, DJ and club resorts. It still retains a more insider and exclusive a scene, but it's certainly on the circuit though. The crme de la crme of top international DJs knows Malta well; with many of them having been back several times. Gaslamp Killer and Markus Schultz are among recent island converts.

The difference between Malta and the Ayia Napa's of this world is that the local crowd, the islanders, made the scene in the first place, for themselves first and foremost. Most Mediterranean resorts' clubbing was created to sate the tourist appetites. But in Malta, clubbing has a big home market which means it feels more real and is more honestly appreciated. The scene is also a year-round affair not just a summer jamboree.

Malta also has its own cult DJs who are making waves such as DJ Toby and a host of others including Miss Roberta, DJ Ruby, DJ Mag and more.

But, summer is clubbing's most active season, and in Malta that means open air (so long as permits are granted to an hour that suits clubbers). Summer 2010 sees things kick off with the fourth edition of Malta Music Week (25 - 30 June), featuring Isle of MTV (30 June), Creamfields Malta, G7 nights at Gianpula as well as Ministry of Sound. Isle of MTV last year was right up there with the best festivals in Europe, and headlined by Lady GaGa and the Black Eyed Peas. This year's line up sees Kid Rock, Scissor Sisters and Kelis among the big names

The free open air event has become one the high points of the European summer gig music circuit, and now draws crowds to the islands from overseas. The audience is estimated to number around 50,000.

When it comes to other venues and events later in the summer, try Paceville bars for one-off and regular sets on specific nights. Paceville is Malta's main nightlife area. One outstanding venue is Gianpula, a start-up of the '80s but now with a new lease of life and following. With its pool, countryside location and great view of Malta's medieval capital, Mdina, it's proved a winning formula for cognoscenti clubbers. History, culture and clubbing in Malta - a great combination for the insider clubber.
