Macgruber Film Review Online

Share: MacGruber is the latest attempt to spin a SNL skit into a feature length movie
. Happily for audiences, this one works!
MacGruber pulls off the nearly impossible " make a good movie from a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch. Bombs such as Coneheads, It"s Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, The Ladies Man were a complete waste of celluloid. Exactly 2 have been good " The Blues Brothers (masterpiece) and Wayne"s World (nearly masterpiece). MacGruber is not a near masterpiece, but it is good. Very good.
If you"ve seen the SNL sketches you know there wasn"t much there. MacGruber sits in a room ". says some dumb things ... and then blow himself up. Any movie made from these sketches would have to develop the character far further than any other sketch. The movie handles MacGruber"s background early on.
MacGruber is a military hero whose wife was killed in front of him 10 years before on their wedding day. It was actually MacGruber who was marked for death by his longtime arch enemy Dieter von Cunth (Val Kilmer). But Cunth missed killing MacGruber and instead killed his wife. Devastated, MacGruber let the world think he too was killed in the attack, and went into a self imposed exile and remained hidden for the next 10 years.
But now Dieter von Cunth has reemerged and gotten ahold of a nuclear warhead. No one is able to stop whatever dastardly plan he has, so MacGruber unexpectedly comes out of hiding to take on his arch nemesis himself.
What follows next is a fantastic series of parodies of 1980s tv shows and movies. The writers did an excellent job of identifying what was stereotypical and absurd in those shows and twisted them around in MacGruber.
First, Macgruber recruits his toughest and most feared mercenary friends ("getting the gang back together") to help in his fight " then immediately accidently blows them all up. All he is left with is a woman who would really rather write pop-songs.
All the 1980s clichs are here " the mullet, the pop-rock soundtrack, the removable car stereo, the reflective aviator sunglasses, etc. And they have fun lampooning action shows like MacGyver. For some reason everybody thinks of MacGruber as some super-spy, when actually he is a major screwup.
MacGruber is very well done and very funny. Don"t hesitate to see it if you can.
