Looking for an E-book Reader This Christmas?

E-book readers may be on many people's Christmas list this year. If you have a loved one who has placed an e-book reader on their list, then you might be wondering how to pick out the perfect device.

For those of you who have seen the term E-book reader but have no idea what it is, it is formally defined as an electronic device that is designed for the primary purpose of reading digital books, periodicals and other e-ink technology. The E-book reader is becoming popular because it is portable and light (that is in comparison to some very large novels) or a laptop. The E-book reader is also easier to read because of the fact its screen was designed just for reading. The display is actually called an electronic ink display.

The most popular E-book reader is the Kindle, released by Amazon the online book company.Looking for an E-book Reader This Christmas?

While buyers were at first tentative about buying an electronic reading device, it didn't take long for the concept to catch on due to its easy-on-the-eyes display and the convenience of uploading and buying books on demand. Since the release of the Kindle, many other companies have entered the market with their own version of E-readers. Some of these companies include Sony and Barnes & Noble. With so many choices, is one E-book reader really that different than another? There are minor differences, in that, picking out the right reader for you will all depend upon your preferences.

The first preference you should identify is what type of screen you want and how big? The Kindle and Sony's Readers both use a single monochrome e-ink screen. These screens don't have glare and look a lot like paper. Not having glare makes eye strain less a problem for long reading sessions. These screens are also easy to read under direct sunlight, unlike most LCD screens. So what is wrong with this screen nothing expect it is monochrome, meaning it lacks color. Its varying shades of gray help give images depth but it isn't the same as full color. Monochrome screens also use less energy, meaning your battery will last longer.

Kindle's screen size on the DX version is 9.7 inches while Sony's Reader Pocket Edition is 5 inches in size.Looking for an E-book Reader This Christmas?

If color is important to you then Barnes & Noble's Nook may be right for you. The screen is LCD color. Devices like the Barnes & Noble Nook offers VividView color within a 7 inch screen. The color screen brings all your favorite title's to life with color, including cookbooks, children's books and books that really are better in color.

Many of the E-book readers have Wi-Fi, meaning one can download their favorite book from any wireless connection. You can browse books and then buy them. Having Wi-Fi adds convenience to you in your shopping needs but be sure to ask whether the reader does have it. Border's Kobo E-Reader and Sony's Pocket Edition do not have wireless connectivity and one would have to buy books via a computer card or SD card.

Last, determine what format your E-reader deciphers its e-books. Today, there is no single universal e-book format and this means they are being published in all types of ways. If you are looking for free books from Google or the library, which often use an ePub format, the Kindle doesn't support these. You also want to check pricing on your favorite books, for those you plan to buy believe it or not they vary as well, as opposed to purchasing a traditional book. Do you like newspapers and books? Barnes & Noble and the Kindle can access these but other readers cannot.

Last, determine how much you want to spend. Prices of E-readers vary according to memory, size, displays and whether they have Wi-Fi.
