London Eye, a modern marvel that enthralls the visitor

The London Eye, an immense Ferris wheel standing no less than 135 m tall is located in Central London on the banks of the River Thames. The largest such wheel at the time of its construction in 1999, it is still the tallest in Europe; it has achieved the status of Britain's most frequented paid attraction, luring 3.5 million visitors each year.

The wheel rotates 32 air-conditioned capsules, each capable of holding up to 25 persons and weighing 10 tonnes. The passengers may move around freely inside the capsules as the London Eye takes them on a sensational journey into the heavens. The panoramic view from the peak position of the wheel is sensational, with riders able to experience a spectacular view over the buildings of London. Interestingly the Eye does not stop for passengers to climb aboard or disembark; the rotation rate of the wheel is slow enough for passengers to get in or out while the wheel is in motion.

The London Eye features components from several European nations; steel from the UK manufactured in the Netherlands; bearings from Germany, cables from Italy; meanwhile the capsules were constructed in France, with glass from Italy; the hub and spindle were cast in the Czech Republic; the UK supplied the electrical components.

Naturally the construction of such an immense state of the art showpiece was no simple task. Sections of the wheel were ferried up the Thames in barges, and the different sections were assembled independently on raised platforms on the river. After the entire wheel was complete it was raised at no more than 2 degrees per hour until an elevation of 65 degrees was reached. The wheel was then kept at that elevation for a week while the engineers planned the final stage of the lift. The entire weight of the steel in the Eye is 1,700 tonnes.
