In Alexandria, Virginia stands the imposing Alexandria City Hall which dates to 1871. Initially the site was a marketplace and subsequently a courthouse; the building which stands today is a replica of the previous building created in 1817 which was destroyed by fire.
The architect of the building which one sees today was renowned architect Adolf Cluss, originally a native of Germany. In the building blueprints Cluss laid special emphasis on the durability and robustness of the framework so as to withstand mishaps. The design basically comprises of sturdy walls and masonry with columns of cast iron, with a ceiling composed of wood.
The building is designed in the Second Empire fashion, with symmetrical dcor and window types. The main section of the building consists of two stories, with three story pavilions at each corner and a central pavilion of four stories.

A reproduction of the earlier market steeple, this adornment is finished in the Georgian style of architecture. Initially the City Hall also contained courts, the Masonic Lodge, and the fire and police stations. Some areas were reserved for market stalls.
