Copyright (c) 2011 John VIt's only the first of April, but the South Dakota Department of Transportation has already issued its warnings and regulations for the 71st Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally August 8 -14, 2011. Every summer since 1938, with few and rare interruptions, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has attracted some of the finest motorcycle riders and operators from around the world. Not to mention the collection of customized motorcycles that line the streets of Sturgis, as the "#1 Design" event is still a huge attraction for motorcycle designers, customizers, and fans. But the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally starts and ends with the treacherous Jackpine Gypsies "Hill Climb."The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club began in 1936 with the purchase of an Indian Motorcycle franchise in Sturgis by Clarence "Pappy" Hoel. Their first August afternoon rally in 1936 was called the "Black Hills Classic," and by 1975 the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally had become a 7-day event that featured the finest in motorcycle accessories, engine technology, and overall bike design in the entire United States. The Rally also became famous as a meeting place of motorcycle clubs from across the country, some of them more infamous than courteous. There are even Sturgis Web cams, which allow you to view the Rally as it's happening. That's not really the point, though. Is it? It's about riding motorcycles. With its 71st Annual Rally, the City of Sturgis, South Dakota, has become synonymous with motorcycles and summer fun. More than a half-million riders and participants will gather in and around the splendor and history of the Black Hills. The nearby town of Deadwood is well known as the setting for the HBO show of the same name. It can be said that outlaws, hustlers, gamblers, roughriders, and gold-diggers were the original occupants and settlers of the nearby hotels and campsites. Almost all of them were riding horses when they arrived, while almost all of the citizens and denizens of Sturgis in the month of August ride motorcycles.Nearly 150 years since its inception as a U.S. territory and the Black Hills area is still an attractive place to spread your wings and let your freedom fly. If you're a hard-core, motorcycle-riding enthusiast who likes the motorcycling spirit of Sturgis, you've come to the right place. You'll find almost anything motorcycle related as you prepare for your Sturgis trip, except those wings. You'll have to grow those on your own. Fly motorcycle, fly.
