Lend not and if you do, don't expect to get your money back!

Lend not and if you do, don't expect to get your money back!

There are two kinds of lenders - those who lend for earning money and those who lend for losing money, without realizing, of course! I am referring to professional moneylenders and sympathetic moneylenders. Professional moneylenders dictate terms, charge interest and follow a system for recovery. They are especially adept at squeezing money out of both those who willingly deafault and those who cannot help defaulting because they don't have the money. How the professional moneylenders squeeze money out of the second category is a mystery.

The sympathetic moneylenders, on the other hand, end up with bad debts. Many of them will willingly accept excuses and requests for more time because such excuses and requests rekindle their hopes of getting the money at sometime in the future. I had this experience with quite a few of my tormentors, i mean borrowers. I particularly remember one who made it a point to voluntarily come and meet me quite often to reassure me again and again that he was going to repay my loan on a specific date, which was continuously being shifted to the future. When I finally realized that I would never get my money back from him, I was angered by the way he deliberately fooled me again and again. He not only got my money but also some enjoyment at my expense.

Now, why don't our friends and others to whom we lend money liberally out of good faith, repay us? There are two possibilities. One, they have no way of doing it. In this case, it was our fault that we lent the money without taking the trouble to find out whether the objective of our sympathy had the means to repay or the ways to earn money. This is something the professional moneylender does. He will not advance even one dollar to his best friend, if the lender knew that his friend has no way of repaying the amount lent.

The second category of people belong to what is called willful defaulters. Such people never deserved our sympathy in the first place.

Shakespeare advised us, "Neither a borrower, nor a lender be; for loan oft both loses itself and friend." Now times have changed. We are being advised to borrow. "Borrow, spend and then think of earning to repay what you have borrowed "seems to be the slogan. At least this is what credit card companies seem to be doing!

So, my suggestion will be: Do not lend, if you expect the loan to be repaid. Lend without expectation and get excited if you receive the repayment. The better option will be to gift. Instead of lending a thousand dollars, you can gift a hundred dollars, telling the beneficiary that he or she need not repay it. You will be happy and the receiipient of your kindness will be very happy!
