You won't exactly cause the first robotics revolution with your Legos Mindstorm NXT robots taking over the world, but with all the unlimited things you can do with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT, you'll be interested and delighted for a lifetime. It's kind of like that old classic Lego set that you might still have stored away. It's always good fun when you bring it back out and see what new things you can construct. The Mindstorms set will have a similar effect, but better - you'll never put it away in the basement, it will always be kept in sight - ready to be drawn away and played with again and again..
In all honesty it's quite pricy for a Christmas gift, but for a gift you can go on using forever, the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is certainly worth it.
Who Should You Get The LegoMindstorms Set For
The Mindstorms set is suitable for anyone over ten years of age. The instructions for making and programming your first few robots are really quite simple to follow.
The term 'programming' may seem complicated, but it's astonishingly easy when you actually get it and give it a try.
Kids can find many ways of enjoying their Mindstorms set, whereas the die-hard robotics fan can indulge himself in complicated programs that can play naughts and crosses and even solve a Rubik's cube.
What Does The LegoMindstorms Come With??
The Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547 consists of a whooping 619 pieces. This consists of a collection of beams, rods, sensors, connectors and wheels.
Standard Constructing Blocks
You may notice that the standard piece is a beam instead of a block as they usually have in LEGO, causing it to look a little like Meccano. Not like Meccano however, you can easily put the pieces together without the need for any screw drivers or spanners - just use your hands. All you need is the contents of your box, and ofcourse... a PC.
Because there are quite a few pieces that look alike, you'll probably be looking around at lot at first trying to find for the right unit. But give it a bit of time and you'll start to know just what you're looking for.
3 Motors
These motors will cause your robots physical motions.
Sensory Units
The sensors will allow your machine to obtain data about its surroundings. Here are the sensors that the Legos Mindstorm NXT is equipped with
1. A light sensor, with which your robot can 'see' different levels of light and even 'see' colors so that it can respond when you show it a blue ball for example, and not respond to a yellow one or respond differently.
2. A unit that senses touch, which allows your robot to have a certain reaction when it touches something/someone, or when something/someone else touches the robot.
3. An audio sensor that is the 'ear' of the robot, allowing it to 'hear' different sounds.
4. An ultrasound sensory unit that makes use of echo-location, so your robot can determine how far away it is from an object such as a wall.
The Mindstorms Intelligent Brick
This is your robot's head, a tiny computer that processes info from the 4 unique sensors and according to your programming, directs the servo motors to respond by carrying out a movement, whether it be by stepping forwards, turning a wheel, shooting balls, flipping through pages in a book..... and so on.
Instruction Guide
Despite Mindstorms seeming so complex when you haven't tried it, the User Guide is brilliantly simple, with one-step-at-a-time instructions on how to make a shooter bot, robotic alligator, color sorting machine and a walking robot as featured on the box.
When you've mastered these 4 models, you can then go on to try out innovative machines of your own choosing. If you think you've consumed your creativity, you can give your mind a rest and purchase guides written by experts on how to build some phenomenal robots.
The one trouble you may face when venturing past the guide book and into the undiscovered, is a lack of pieces when you want to construct something big. If you run into this pitfall, rest assured - you do not need to purchase a whole nother Mindstorms set. Instead, you can simply complement your current Mindstorms set with parts from the Lego Technique range.

Beware, the Mindstorms 8547 is already quite expensive so it doesn't make sense to pay needlessly higher prices at the wrong stores.The cheapest stores to buy this are the ones that are able to sell enough to offer a discount.
