Learning To Get Your Child To Talk With You - Help From A Parenting Ebook

A Parenting ebook can teach you how to better communicate with your child. Having trouble getting through to your child? Does he/she answer you with one word answers. Do they just ignore you? Do they not engage you in conversation? These are all things you can change.

As many parents do, they talk to their kids, and don't really listen to them. And then we wonder why our children don't do as we say. Communication is a two way street. Before we can expect our kids to listen to us, we must first learn to listen to them. Keeping your child involved in the conversation is very important. This means that we don't just tell them something and expect nothing in return except good behavior.

Listening to your child's point of view not only shows that you care, it also shows that you respect them. How can we expect our children to respect us if we don't respect them? Explain to them that their opinion is important.

Here is a simple way to get your child to open up.

1) Asking your child open-ended questions is a good way to get them into the conversation. This means to ask them questions that require more than one word answers. If you ask them a question that only requires a yes or no answer, that is most likely all that you are going to get.

2) Learning to listen to your children is much different than just hearing them. Show them that their point of view matters. Let them get their point across, and discuss the matter in a conversational form. Listen to what they actually have to say. Reassure them by reiterating what they have said to make sure that they have gotten their point across to you correctly.

A good way of doing this is by stating "okay this is what I am hearing... is that correct?" You can word it your own way, but this is the gist of it. You will soon see that your child will begin to talk to you more and they will learn to express themselves better.

3) So many times parents will say "Because I said so". That just makes your child feel inferior and can often make them rebellious. Getting them involved in the decision making process makes them feel more respected and secure.

Even though you are the parent and will ultimately have the final decision, getting their opinion on a subject will make them feel more responsible. This can have tremendous effects on them as they grow older.

4) When making your final decision, make sure that your children understands WHY you made it. Give them a good reason behind your answer. You may not think that because you are the adult and they are the child that you don't have to do this, but trust me, it makes for a much better relationship between the both of you.
