Learn About History Of Yazd Before You Travel To Iran

History of Yazd is very interesting and dates back to 3000 years ago when the Median empire was established

. The city was then known by the name of Ysatis. It got its present name from Yazdegerd I of the Sassanid dynasty. The people in this province mostly followed the Zoroastrian religion at the time of Sassanians.

When Arab Islamic conquest of Iran took place, the Zoroastrians from nearby places took shelter in this town. The people continued to follow this religion and even paid a levy for doing so. It took a gradual change encompassing many years for Islam to become the main religion of this town, which you will learn during your travel to Iran.

Secure Place

Geographically, Yazd used to be situated in a remote desert of Iran and quite a difficult city to travel to. Today, it is easily reachable by good-quality highways. Therefore the history of Yazd shows that this city has been able to resist the invasion of foreign rulers and has been comparatively free from destruction. Many people have come to this town to take shelter from different parts of Persia when Genghis Khan attacked the country. The great traveler Marco Polo visited this city in 1272 and was greatly impressed by the silk-weaving industry here.

Important in History

During the 14th century, when the Muzaffarid dynasty ruled over Yazd, it became the capital of their empire. The Injuids under the leadership of Shaikh Abu Ishaq tried to take control of this town but were unsuccessful in their attempt. During this period, the province witnessed the construction of several monuments like the Friday Mosque and many other important buildings. Later on, in the 18th century, the town passed on to the hands of the Qajar dynasty and was ruled by the Bakhtiari Khans.

Emigration by People

History of Yazd says that when the Safavids ruled over this place in the 16th century, some of its people left the city and shifted to an area on the Iran-Afghanistan border. This place was called Yazdi. Presently, you can visit this locality in the Farah city of Afghanistan. Although the city of Yazd has many people following Islam now, you can still see the Zoroastrian fire temple here with the traditional fire never being extinguished.
