Shiraz has been an important town throughout the ages which you will find out before you order a tour to Iran. Travelers came across it when they went from Susa to Persepolis and Pasargadae in the Achaemenian period. Ferdowsi's Shahnama mentions that Artabanus V, the Parthian ruler of Iran, gave importance to the town. The palace of Abu Nasr or Ghasre Abu-Nasr can be found in this place too. The Sassanids also gave prominence to this city as it connected Bishapur with Gur and Istakhr.

Rise in Importance

History of Shiraz shows that it became a capital in 693 under the Arab invaders. When they attacked Istakhr, the Sassanian capital, the nearby town of Shiraz came into prominence. Consequently, the place was also the capital of the Buwayhid Empire during 945-1055. Many mosques and palaces were built along with a library and a huge city wall.

The city was also ruled by Seljuks and Khwarezmids until the Mongols entered Iran. However, because the local ruler submitted meekly to Genghis Khan and offered tributes, the city was not ruined. Tamerlane also showed benevolence and spared the town when Shah Shoja, the local monarch submitted in 1382.
