History of Kerman can be traced back to its establishment as a defense outpost by Ardeshir I in the 3rd century

. He was the first ruler of the Sassanid dynasty and called this defense outpost by the name of Behdesir. This place was passed on to the Muslim rulers in 642 following the battle of Nahavand. But, the Zoroastrians and the Kharijites still lived in this city till 698.

The city got the name of Kerman sometime during this period. The 11th and 12th centuries saw the town under the rule of the Seljuk Turks who also annexed Oman and Fars.

Trade Center

There is information that it became a major trade center which connected the Persian Gulf with Central Asia and Khorasan. But after that, the town was ransacked by many foreign invaders. It again came into prominence under the Safavid dynasty. Trade improved with rugs and carpets being exported to the European countries of Germany and England during this time.

Fall and Rise

History of Kerman tells you that the city was conquered by Lotf Ali Khan in 1794 after he overcame the Qajars in 1793. In turn, he was attacked and made captive for six months in this town by Agha Mohammad Khan. All the children and women were forced into slavery and it took just 90 days for the entire city to be destroyed. It was in the 19th century that Kerman was again re-established and normalcy returned in the 20th century. Today it is becoming one of the major industrialized cities of Iran.
