Latest Bollywood Movie Raajneeti Review

The new bollywood movie Raajneeti finally hit the silver screen after much speculation!

Known for his penchant for meaningful and qualitative cinema, Prakash Jha has put his "inside knowledge"(he is touted to be very close to Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar) to good use. The film boasts of a mammoth star cast, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif, Sara Thompson, Naseeruddin Shah and many others.

As the name suggests, Raajneeti is all about electoral politics and about dynasties in power in India and how people resort to various means to achieve that power. Inspired by the legendary Indian epic, "Mahabharat", Raajneeti depicts brothers at war, lusting for power just like the clashing Kauravas and Pandavas. Every character in Raajneeti bears resemblance to characters from Mahabharat. The film also reflects hues from "The Godfather" by Mario Puzo. Moderately paced, it takes a while to get the grip of the film as drama unfolds gradually. As the movie progresses it brings to light the nasty, vicious and sometimes even gruesome games people play to gain power. It is truly startling to watch how complex politics can be!

The film is about Prithvi (Arjun Rampal), the apparent heir of a political dynasty and top contender for the crown. His biggest opponent is his cousin, Veerendra (Manoj Bajpai) who believes that it is his birthright to rule and will leave no stone unturned to get back the power. Veerendra befriends the fiery young Sooraj (Ajay Devgan) with political aspirations of his own to use him win back the lost power. Sooraj, a Dalit (this character resembles Karna from Mahabharat) is completely unaware of his family lineage, which is revealed much later in the film. Prithvi's younger brother Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) with no political dreams and inclinations gets pulled into the battleground of family politics because of an untimely assassination. But he takes to his role like a fish takes to water as he gets guided at every step by his mentor Brij Gopal, played by Nana Patekar. Indu (Katrina Kaif) also gets involved in this political game that gets bloodier by the day.

Unlike other hindi bollywood movies, Raajneeti does not have much scope for songs and humor. The "Mora Piya"number that has made its way up the charts plays mostly in the narrative. Some critics have negated the film on the grounds of it being too lengthy at two hours, fifty minutes for nineteen reels and a disappointing climax. But Raajneeti is for the thinking audiences as it manages to keep them enraptured even with its length. Prakash Jha does a great job as he deftly unravels the true and horrible face of Indian democracy in an extremely realistic manner. The screenplay is excellent and the dialogues make the desired impact in every sequence. Cinematography too is flawless.

Apart from a gripping plot, interesting story line and superb direction by Prakash Jha the film is marked by stupendous performances by every actor in the film. Naseeruddin Shah is as remarkable as ever in his brief role as Bhaskar Sanyal, a powerful leftist leader. Ranbir Kapoor surprises fans with every film as he is top notch. Arjun Rampal's performance is unbelievingly good and true to life. Manoj Bajpai in his negative role could not have been better. Ajay Devgan too stands out and makes an impactful performance. Nana Patekar lives up to his stature as an actor and only he could have given such a convincing performance. Katrina has come a long way too as she sheds her glamorous image to play her part. Her sincerity and naturalness shows.

Raajneeti is a must-watch film for the cerebral cinegoer!
