Laser Surgery For Teeth (periodontal Laser Surgery)
Laser surgery and laser based procedures are used to treat many dental problems
. The use of lasers of varying intensities for a variety of medical procedures is nothing new. In fact, the application for laser use in medicine has been investigated since the 1960's.
The laser concentrates controllable amounts of energy into a beam which can be used to effectively remove damages tissue or repair it. In Dentistry, a periodontal laser is used to remove tartar, gum disease and infections with precision. Practitioners and researchers claim that this form of treatment removes 99% of the bacteria causing cavities and infections.
Laser surgery is painless - Even though a local anesthesia is administered to ensure that a patient feels absolutely nothing, a laser procedure is generally painless. No invasive tools are used and the laser performs the task of clearing out the infection and sealing the area to prevent reoccurrence or further problems.
Healing after a procedure is much faster and safer - There is no significant swelling, gum-bleeding or post-procedural discomfort as a result of a Laser procedure. The laser's energy sterilizes the affected area and seals off open / damaged blood vessels, minimizing the reoccurrence of infection or any bleeding and helping the body heal faster.
The procedure is non-invasive and requires no stitches or bandages - As the procedure requires no cutting, you can be up and about as soon as the procedure is completed. The way the laser works reduces recovery time to virtually nothing. There is only a requirement to follow the dentist's advice on the matter after surgery.
The procedure
The depth of periodontal pockets along the sides of the teeth and gums are measured with precision tools
The Bacteria and diseased tissue, including the plaque which causes decay in the pockets are removed using the laser's energy - A mildly concentrated laser is used to effectively 'burn and dry out the infection'.
Special tools are used to remove tartar and the pockets are cleaned and sterilized to completely remove all bacteria and to ensure that it does not reoccur. The area is then sealed with the laser
The dentist then ensures that the teeth are set correctly and that the gums are sealed against the teeth
The healing process begins without any discomfort or pain after the infection has been removed
Teeth whitening
Commonly known as tooth bleaching, this dental procedure is commonly practiced as a cosmetic-dentistry procedure and many people all over the world have it performed on their teeth regularly. Childhood teeth are naturally white, but with age and changes in the mineral structure of the hard tissue, teeth become darker as we enter adulthood. While this process is natural, our teeth also become darker and stained because of eating and the use of tobacco, coffee, tea and red wine and also because of bacterial pigmentation, tartar and even medication (some anti-biotic medication causes staining). As we age, the enamel becomes less shiny and staining causes the teeth to turn yellow.
Cleaning and Bleaching
Many people who have their teeth cleansed regularly also opt for the bleaching procedure in order to have whiter and cleaner looking teeth. There are many procedures that accomplish this including the use of bleaching strips [the strips cover the front of the teeth], bleaching pens, bleaching gel as well as laser bleaching and natural bleaching. Oxidizing agents, which are the main ingredient of the process, act to penetrate the structure of the enamel and oxidizes 'interprismatic' stain deposits. If whitening is done regularly (once in 4-7 months) over a period of time, the underlying 'dentin' layer of the teeth is also gets bleached - internal bleaching is also conducted to remove the staining on the 'dentin' layer. In cases where bleaching itself is not effective, 'masking' the stains on the teeth is also an option.
Laser bleaching involves the use of an oxidizing agent followed by the use of LED light - most effectively through a halogen device - for approximately 5 to 15 minutes.
While many treatments show results, research has shown that there may be some drawbacks. Chemical burns from the use of bleaching gel - when the gel contacts sensitive tissue - have been reported, as well as over-bleaching. Rebound - where the effects of the bleaching are reversed within a short time have also been experienced.
Side effects of bleaching are not uncommon although a small percentage of people actually encounter them. The ones that most commonly occur most often are an increase in the sensitivity of the teeth (early -on on the bleaching process) and mild irritation in the gums and other soft tissue (which usually occurs later) usually as a result of an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray. These side-effects are temporary and usually disappear within a few days following the treatment.
